DIY Project Ideas For Spring

After what felt like a very long winter, spring has officially sprung and it’s time to get back into the garden and preparing it for the summer ahead! If you’re ready and raring to get back into your outdoor space, we’ve gathered some of the best garden DIY project ideas for spring to give you some inspiration.

Dust off the lawnmower

It’s safe to say that your lawn will still be feeling the effects of the cold winter and chances are, mowing it over the cold season wasn’t top of your list! Start off by tidying up any uneven edging and getting rid of any debris that’s found it’s way to your lawn. Once this is done, check that the lawn isn’t too waterlogged before you start – excess water will just lead to a muddy mess if you start mowing so always wait till it is fully dry.

If your lawn is overgrown, set the cutting blades to high for the first post-winter cut. Tired lawns may need and extra dash of TLC in the form of lawn feed or new seed if there’s serious damage. By summer your lawn should be ready to go!

Transform garden hardware

Spring is the perfect time to give your garden hardware a refresh! Garden decking, trellis and furniture will show the effects of winter unless they were properly covered or stored away, so take this opportunity to give them a good clean and a new lick of paint.

Remove all traces of weeds, dirt and debris before getting the pressure washer out and giving everything a good clean. Once it’s clean, assess whether your timber decking or garden trellis could do with additional painting or treatment to get it back to its best for the warmer weather.

If your garden hardware is beyond repair, take a look at our range of garden essentials. At Arnold Laver online, we offer a wide range of timber decking in various lengths and widths so you are able to effectively tailor your decking to your space. Add decorative trellis to your space in an array of styles and sizes, perfect for training plants and adding an extra focus to your garden.

Prepare flowers and vegetables

Spring is the time to sow annual seeds such as poppies, wildflowers and sunflowers, the perfect choice for those looking to create a bright, colourful space. These seeds can withstand the cold and can be grown outdoors, just look for areas where there is well-drained earth.

Now is also the time to start planning your vegetable patch. If you enjoy growing your own fresh produce these are just some of the key vegetables that you should start focusing on in the spring:

  • Spinach
  • Peas
  • Onions
  • Carrots
  • Lettuce
  • Radishes
  • Parsnips

Always read the sowing instructions on your seeds before planting as some vegetables need to be planted indoors before being transferred to the garden. If there is still a chill in the air make sure you cover your vegetable patch with a horticultural fleece from protection.
